Tasting Notes

Beans currently on offer can be bought in the Members Area

Sample roasted on September 18th 2006.

Tasted at 4 and 5 days post roast.
This is an attempt to use the cupping evaluation form that we used at Toby’s Tasting Night this week. Being very much an informal ‘cupper’ (as opposed to a veteran coffee drinker!), you need to take this with a virtual pinch of salt. :)
The scores are out of ten.

Dry fragrance: sweet, a little nutty, toasty. 8

Wet Aroma: Toast, hint of nut and fruit, plus a little chocolate. 7

Body: Full, rich 8

Acidity: Remarkably crisp – enough to cut through milk in a cappuccino – but not overpowering. 8.5

Flavour: Remarkably complex (compared to my memory of the last Columbian I tried, which tended towards blandness). Some buttery-ness. The acidity was a feature. I personally found it little too powerful as a straight espresso, but I’m sure it would suit some people very well. The brightness meant that it worked well as a milk drink. 8.5

Aftertaste: a bit of nut and chocolate in the aftertaste, which lingered for sometime. 7

Using the scoring method on the evaluation sheet, the bean comes out with:
93 – rated as outstanding.

This bean is a good candidate for our next monthly offer in October.

Roasting notes: (posted Oct 19th 2006)
This is an easy bean to roast.
You cannot miss first crack – it sounds like gunfire! Second is much quieter, but still clear.
It roasts very evenly, and the two batches I’ve done have to the very first snaps of second. My feeling is, that would handle a lighter roast well though.

The space between first and second crack was fairly short, so popper or other hot air roasters – keep a close eye on it, because, my guess is you won’t have much time to play with!

Don’t forget people – you need to wait until the offer opens on Oct 17th… THEN order :-)

Paul Says:

I’ll definitely go 5 kilo’s

Neil Says:

Hmmm, by my count, we have a total of about 50Kg (from 70kg) already accounted for – included the amounts people have mentioned above… If the demand is there, a second bag is doable…
